Crowns & Bridges Q&A

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are prosthetic devices that restore damaged and missing teeth. Unlike removable dentures, crowns and bridges are fixed in place so they look and feel just like your natural teeth. While dentists often use crowns and bridges together, they perform different functions.

A crown is a cap that fits over your tooth to restore its shape, size, and color. The Mosaic Dental team recommends a crown if you have a tooth that’s cracked, worn, or severely discolored.

Bridges literally bridge the gap left by a missing tooth. Much like actual bridges, a dental bridge consists of two supporting teeth (the abutments) with an artificial tooth in the middle, called a pontic.

What can crowns and bridges fix?

Crowns and bridges can rehabilitate your teeth after suffering severe damage like:

  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Missing teeth
  • Severely discolored teeth
  • Teeth worn down from grinding
  • Misshapen teeth

Dental crowns also protect weak teeth from further damage, while both crowns and bridges can help restore a bad bite.

What can I expect from crowns and bridges?

The Mosaic Dental team uses an intraoral camera and digital X-rays — which offer a 75% reduction in radiation compared to traditional X-rays — to create your personalized treatment plan. In addition to using minimal amounts of radiation, digital X-rays can deliver a panoramic view of your mouth for better results.

To place a bridge, the team must first prepare your abutment teeth for crowns. They reshape and file down your abutment teeth to make room for your new crowns. Once these teeth are prepared, the team takes impressions of your teeth to create your custom crowns and pontic.

Creating custom crowns and bridges can take up to two weeks, so you’ll wear a temporary restoration in the meantime.

When you return for your final visit, the team removes the temporary restoration and replaces it with your permanent bridge and crowns. They make minor tweaks to ensure it’s the perfect fit for you before cementing your bridge and crowns in place.
