Mouth Guards Q&A

What are mouth guards?

Mouth guards are removable appliances that the team at Mosaic Dental makes from a highly detailed impression of your smile. Your mouth guard is designed to fit snugly over your teeth and treat one or more oral health concerns.

The Mosaic Dental team provides patients with mouth guards made from the highest quality materials, so you can rest assured that your mouth guard will be safe, comfortable, and help improve your oral health.

What conditions do you treat with mouth guards?

Mouth guards are very versatile. The team at Mosaic Dental can use them to treat a wide range of conditions, including:

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a very serious sleep disorder wherein the soft tissue in the back of your throat periodically collapses and obstructs your airway. When this happens, your body is deprived of oxygen, which can have very adverse effects on your health.

The team at Mosaic Dental offers specially fitted mouth guards as an alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which is the standard treatment for sleep apnea. Your mouth guard is designed to gently push your lower jaw forward, which helps to fight the obstruction and keep your airway open.

Chronic grinding (bruxism)

Bruxism is a condition where you habitually grind or clench your teeth. While a mouth guard doesn’t stop you from grinding and clenching, putting a layer of soft plastic between your teeth significantly minimizes the damage that bruxism otherwise causes.

What is involved in getting a mouth guard?

Getting a mouth guard at Mosaic Dental is easy and only requires a couple of office visits. During your first visit, the team uses a digital scanner to take detailed images of your mouth. They send those images to a dental lab that uses them to custom fabricate your mouth guard so it fits perfectly in your mouth.

You come back for a second visit when your mouth guard is back from the lab so you can try it on and make sure it fits properly. If you and the team are happy with your fit, you can take it home with you and begin enjoying the benefits of a healthier mouth.
