Soft Tissue Graft Q&A

What is a soft tissue graft?

A soft tissue graft, also known as a gingival graft or gum graft, is a procedure that the Mosaic Dental team performs to restore your oral health if your gums are receding. It involves removing soft tissue from the roof of your mouth or another area of your gums and attaching it to the recessed areas of your smile.

By rehabilitating your damaged gum tissue, a soft tissue graft protects the roots of your teeth from becoming exposed. Exposed tooth roots are highly susceptible to tooth decay, more prone to abrasion, and generally more sensitive.

What causes my gums to lose tissue?

Some of the conditions that might leave your smile lacking in gum tissue include:

  • Bone loss after a tooth extraction
  • Periodontal disease
  • Physical trauma or injury
  • Developmental issues

Some patients also experience gum loss if they’ve worn ill-fitting dentures for too long.

What does a soft tissue augmentation entail?

First, the Mosaic Dental team uses a local anesthetic to numb the tissues in your mouth and minimize any discomfort that the procedure might cause. Once your oral tissues are properly anesthetized, the team removes a small piece of donor tissue, usually from your palate.

Next, they make an incision in the area of your gums where you’re lacking tissue and stitch the donor tissue in place. The donor tissue gradually assimilates into the recessed area of your gums, restoring the harmonious contour of your gums as you heal from the procedure.

What is the recovery like for a soft tissue graft?

You’ll likely need to arrange for a ride home from your surgery since you might be on pain medication immediately after the procedure.

Full recovery typically takes between one and two weeks, during which time you should switch to a soft and cold foods diet to avoid irritating your gums.

Until the team at Mosaic Dental says it’s safe, you should refrain from brushing and flossing during your recovery. You can keep your mouth clean with an antimicrobial mouthwash.

You can minimize any pain or discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications.
